Tarana: Starlink BEAD moves undercut NTIA

Tarana Wireless accuses Starlink of undermining BEAD goals and the work of state broadband offices.

Tarana Wireless, the company behind next-generation fixed wireless access (FWA) technology, says Starlink’s BEAD riders this year undermined the federal program and the state broadband offices that have worked to close the digital divide.

In Tarana’s view, the push to amend BEAD awards created uncertainty and could jeopardize the digital futures of hundreds of thousands of households awaiting connectivity.

Tarana notes that Starlink urged state offices not to sign waivers and argues that the move risks eroding the momentum of BEAD’s nationwide deployment. Tarana emphasizes its own commitments to connect unserved communities and to deliver reliable, fast service through Tarana ngFWA partners.

Tarana’s statement references reporting from Politico that outlines concerns in Congress about Starlink’s ability to meet BEAD commitments and timelines.

“Undoubtedly, there is hard work ahead – there always is when historic change hangs in the balance,” Tarana said. “But at the end of the day, our ISP partners using Tarana ngFWA technology will ensure our BEAD residents will get reliable connectivity, speeds exceeding 100/20 Mbps, and a great in-home experience. We owe them that—no ‘riders’ or ‘do-overs’ needed.”

Note: Tarana remains focused on the 385,000 homes Tarana has pledged to connect and continues to stress its role in delivering BEAD-backed broadband with or without rider-like changes.
