Streamlined Ops: Key for Regional ISPs

Dan Siemon of Preseem argues that regional ISPs must streamline operations with data-driven insights to survive, avoid churn, and compete in the coming years.

In a recent discussion on Beyond the Cable, Dan Siemon, the Chief Product Officer and co-founder of Preseem, warned that regional ISPs that fail to streamline their operations risk losing ground in the years ahead. He emphasized that operators must identify which portions of their networks are delivering subpar experiences rather than waiting for customer complaints to surface.

Siemon stressed that relying on customer grievances as a primary signal is “probably already too late,” noting that churn tends to spike when experiences are poor and customers leave rather than complain repeatedly.

He added that those ISPs who do not optimize processes face a significant disadvantage, likening problem detection without data-driven insights to searching for a needle in a haystack, which translates to higher operating costs over time.

Preseem positions its platform as a practical tool for second- and third-tier ISPs that operate on tighter marketing budgets. The platform promises cross-vendor visibility across all access technologies, enabling providers to determine quickly whether QoE issues originate in the network or in the subscriber’s home.

Described by Siemon as a floodlight for an ISP’s network, Preseem aims to illuminate trouble spots across the entire infrastructure, with the next layer of integration involving closer cooperation with access network equipment to deepen visibility.

The company notes that it crunches vast amounts of data and even builds behavioral models for fixed wireless to understand how equipment should perform versus how it is behaving. This data-driven approach aligns with Siemon’s view that regional providers can play a valuable role in their communities.

“On balance I think regional providers are a really good thing to the ecosystem,” Siemon said, reflecting optimism that Preseem can help them stay afloat and continue serving their communities.
