The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday handed President Donald Trump a major legal setback by striking down tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) in a 6-3 decision.
The majority held that IEEPA does not authorize the president to unilaterally impose tariffs on imports, even amid a national emergency.
The tariffs had targeted goods from Canada, China, and Mexico, and were among measures cited in coverage of Trump’s policy push, including a tariff package associated with the so-called Liberation Day last April, BBC reported.
Anti-tariff groups, such as We Pay the Tariffs, have already begun exploring refunds in response to the ruling, according to BBC’s coverage.
The court’s decision follows months of legal challenges, with setbacks dating back to May of last year and subsequent challenges that culminated in this ruling, CNN reported.
Trump called the ruling a “disgrace” but has not signaled a reversal of tariffs in the near term. Coverage notes he had signaled a global tariff proposal otherwise.
