Streamlined Ops Cut Costs for ISPs, CEO Says

Dan Siemon, CEO of Preseem, argues regional ISPs must streamline operations to stay competitive. He emphasizes data-driven insights as a path to lower costs and reduced churn.

Dan Siemon, CEO of Preseem, said regional ISPs that don’t streamline operations will be at a disadvantage in the years ahead.

He warned that ISPs that can’t pinpoint which parts of their networks deliver subpar experiences will see higher churn, because customers tend to leave after bad experiences.

“Maybe they’ll complain once,” he said, “but often they’re just going to leave.” He added that relying on customer complaints to identify problems is probably “already too late.”

Siemon described Preseem’s platform as a resource for second- and third-tier ISPs that don’t have large marketing budgets, enabling them to maximize operational efficiency by offering actionable, data-driven insights. The tool lets operators view network and subscriber metrics across all access technologies and vendors to determine whether QoE issues originate in the network or in the subscriber’s home.

Calling Preseem a “floodlight” for an ISP’s network, Siemon said it helps operators see where problems are. “The next layer down from that is we integrate with this access network equipment,” he said, noting Preseem crunches vast data and even builds behavioral models for fixed wireless hardware.

Despite the business rationale, Siemon said regional providers are generally good for their communities and that helping them stay afloat is a worthwhile mission. “On balance I think regional providers are a really good thing to the ecosystem,” he said, adding their operations are often closer to the communities they serve.
