Rural Louisiana Center Becomes Broadband Hub

A renovated St. Joseph Community House in Louisiana is being repurposed as a local broadband hub.

A renovated community center in the small town of St. Joseph, Louisiana, is set to become a local broadband hub following upgrades to the St. Joseph Community House that were unveiled at a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday.

Officials say the revamped facility will host high‑speed workspaces and classrooms for data analytics, language learning, and driver’s training, along with space for GED and HiSET tutoring and extracurricular programs tied to nearby schools.

St. Joseph sits in the Mississippi River Delta and today has fewer than 1,000 residents, according to the latest U.S. Census data.

Officials described the site as a multipurpose hub designed to expand workforce development, education, and basic health‑monitoring services that rely on reliable internet connectivity.

Gov. Jeff Landry described the project as a conversion of federal funds into “real infrastructure,” thanking the Trump administration and Louisiana’s congressional delegation for their support. “These broadband expansions demonstrate the impact of strategic investment in critical infrastructure,” he said.

State Sen. Katrina Jackson‑Andrews and State Rep. C. Travis Johnson emphasized the human side of the work, noting the upgrades will open doors for rural families who previously lacked easy access to online education and services. “New opportunities for learning, connection and growth” were echoed by municipal leaders.

Mayor Carl Olds Jr. and Veneeth Iyengar, executive director of ConnectLA, highlighted that the facility will be free or low‑cost for nonprofit and community uses, underscoring the project’s community‑oriented focus as it expands access to essential online services.

Organizers say the renovated building will support a mix of public programming and training aimed at improving employment prospects and access to essential online services for St. Joseph and surrounding communities.
