Superior, Wisconsin, a city near Duluth in the Twin Ports region, has launched ConnectSuperior, a city-owned fiber broadband network built on an open-access model that invites multiple Internet service providers to offer services.
Construction has already wrapped in one neighborhood, with more areas slated for completion in the near term, according to Wisconsin Public Radio. The mayor, Jim Paine, described the project as unique in Wisconsin. Groundbreaking occurred in September 2024, and the total cost is projected to exceed $40 million.
The network is designed as a wholesale platform that lets telecom companies offer services to residents and businesses. ConnectSuperior currently lists two providers—Advanced Stream and Superion Networks—with service packages starting around $62.95 per month.
ConnectSuperior’s site emphasizes affordability and high-performance connectivity, stating the network “allows open access to different telecommunications companies who can offer you a variety of very competitive high speed internet services.”
The city sits along one of the Midwest’s most popular tourist routes on the western shore of Lake Superior, underscoring the potential economic and digital benefits of faster, more reliable broadband.
