Astound completes Newport, Oregon's first fiber-optic network, investing $4.6 million to install 55 miles of fiber for more than 5,900 homes and businesses.

Astound has completed Newport, Oregon’s first fiber optic network, a $4.6 million investment to install 55 miles of fiber that will serve more than 5,000 homes and 900 business locations in the area.

The network is capable of symmetrical speeds up to 5 gigabits per second, enabling faster uploads and downloads for households and remote workers, with anchor institutions such as government buildings, schools, fire stations, libraries and clinics gaining access.

In addition, more than 300 homes in the South Beach area were included, upgrading the previously installed HFC lines. Construction used a mix of above- and below-ground methods to strengthen the overall infrastructure.

With wall-to-wall Wi‑Fi 7 coverage, users can stream 4K content, game online with low latency, and support multiple devices without slowdowns.

The system is designed to withstand Newport’s outdoor climate, reducing service disruptions in wind and ice events when power outages occur, provided residents have alternate power sources or generators.

Astound has been expanding Newport’s connectivity for nearly a decade, following its CoastCom acquisition in 2016, and continues to collaborate with industry partners such as T-Mobile, eero, and DIRECTV to reinforce its fiber network.

“The Newport community deserves high-speed connectivity on par with more urban areas,” said Jared Sonne, Astound senior vice president and general manager, West Region. “Our fiber network is future-ready and scalable to meet today’s demand and tomorrow’s opportunities.”

Astound will maintain and operate the Newport fiber optic network going forward, continuing its commitment to reliable, modern connectivity for residents and businesses.
