New Mexico’s Office of Broadband Access and Expansion (OBAE) has completed its first grant-funded broadband project in rural Chaves County, delivering high-speed internet to Cherry Decker residents near Hagerman.

The Office of Broadband Access and Expansion (OBAE) in New Mexico has completed its first grant-funded broadband project, bringing high-speed internet to 52 rural homes in the Cherry Decker subdivision near Hagerman.

The milestone also marks Connect New Mexico Pilot Program’s first project funded through the federal ARPA Capital Projects Fund to reach 100% completion.

Construction included roughly 11 miles of pole-attached aerial fiber delivered to rural residences, with the project costing about $649,000. The funding included matching contributions from the Peñasco Valley Telephone Cooperative (PVT).

PVT CEO Jim Meyers said the milestone represents more than infrastructure. “It’s about opportunity,” he said. “PVT is grateful for the support and partnership with OBAE in helping us close the digital divide and improve the quality of life for all New Mexicans.”

Andy Exell, OBAE’s ARPA program coordinator, added, “This project’s completion delivers on the state’s promise to connect New Mexico families in the most remote areas of the state. For dozens of homeowners to finally gain high-speed internet, it’s a life changer.”
