5G Debuts in Joralemon Street Tunnel

AT&T and Boldyn Networks activate 5G service in the 1.1-mile underwater Joralemon Street tunnel, linking Brooklyn to Manhattan as part of a broad MTA connectivity push.

AT&T and Boldyn Networks announced the activation of 5G cellular service inside the Joralemon Street tunnel, the 1.1-mile underwater route connecting Brooklyn’s Borough Hall to Manhattan’s Bowling Green. The move forms part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s broader effort to extend wireless coverage across the rail network.

Boldyn, a neutral-host infrastructure provider working with the MTA, says the initial tunnel deployment will be followed by service along segments of the G line, with a goal of blanket coverage across roughly 418 miles of track.

AT&T will be the first carrier to provide on-air service in these tunnel sections, according to a joint release from the companies.

Past deployments include the 42nd Street Shuttle and a portion of the L line between Bedford Avenue and 1st Avenue. Cellular and Wi‑Fi are already available in underground stations systemwide, and MTA officials say the expansion is being delivered at no cost to riders.

Transit and technology experts say the project responds to longstanding rider demand for reliable underground connectivity and aligns with modernization efforts for the region’s rail network.
