GCI, Alaska’s leading telecommunications provider, has announced a strategic partnership with Harmonic to modernize its DOCSIS network and accelerate the rollout of high-bandwidth services across Alaska.
Harmonic’s cOS virtualized broadband platform will transform GCI’s existing infrastructure, enabling DOCSIS 4.0 capabilities with faster speeds, improved reliability, and greater scalability for customers nationwide. The upgrade supports both current multi-gigabit services and future growth toward higher consumer speeds.
As part of the engagement, Harmonic will deliver a turnkey deployment spanning all stages—from high-level and low-level design to outside plant construction. The plan includes enhancements to cables and passive components and the installation of 1.8 GHz amplifiers, with Harmonic providing project management to ensure a seamless transition with minimal service interruptions.
The Harmonic solution uses the cOS broadband platform within a distributed access architecture (DAA), featuring Pebble Unified DOCSIS 4.0 Remote PHY Devices (RPDs) inside Ripple modular DAA nodes. This architecture allows GCI to extend the life of its existing DOCSIS infrastructure while enabling new service innovations.
Harmonic’s cOS Central services will also enable real-time insights and proactive maintenance, helping GCI deliver consistently high-quality broadband experiences with faster speeds and stronger connectivity for subscribers in Alaska.
“Our collaboration with GCI modernizes their network and paves the way for the delivery of high‑quality, high‑bandwidth broadband services to communities across Alaska,” said Yaniv Ben-Soussan, senior vice president of customer experience at Harmonic. “With market‑leading Unified DOCSIS 4.0 solutions and deployment capabilities, we’re committed to ensuring GCI’s success.”
Harmonic is recognized as a market share leader in cable broadband equipment, virtual CMTS, and DAA, with its cOS platform powering more than 35 million customer premise devices worldwide, reflecting the company’s broad reach and experience in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
